Islam was introduced to the Pashtun in the eighth century. All but a few Pashtun tribes are followers of the Sunni Muslim sect. Pashtun are automatically considered Muslims (followers of Islam) at birth.
When a baby is born, Pashtun whisper the call for prayer in the baby’s ear. The male circumcision ceremony is held at the same time as the birth celebration (at about the age of one week). Children officially join in the rituals of prayers and fasting when they reach sexual maturity, but in practice they begin much earlier.
Pashtun society is not homogenous by religion: the overwhelming majority of them are Sunni, with a tiny Shia community. As you can tell from the following chart from Joshua Project, there is no significant population amongst the Pashtuns that adheres to Christian beliefs:
Based on that last category, the need is urgent. We know that salvation comes by calling on the name of the Lord, and to do one, the Pashtuns need to hear His message. Consider the following adaptation of a Romans 10 excerpt:
“For, ‘Every Pashtun who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’ How, then, can Pashtuns call on the one they have not believed in? And how can Pashtuns believe in the one on whom they have not heard?” (Rom. 10:13-14a, changes boldened)
They need to hear the message! And based on this statistic, 0.0% Christian Adherent, there is currently no significant light in their midst to share this truth with them.
“How can Pashtuns believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can Pashtuns hear without someone preaching to them?” (Rom. 10:14b, changes boldened)
Someone needs to GO. Is it you? Are you looking for an invitation from God to be sent out to share where His message has not yet reached? Consider this your invitation.
“And how can anyone preach unless they are sent?” (Rom 10:15a)
Someone needs to SEND. Have you been called to this? Do you know of a couple considering going overseas and looking for direction? Are they looking for financial support? They cannot go unless they are sent. Do not ignore your role in this task.
“And then he said to his disciples: ‘The Pashtun harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his Pashtun harvest field.” (Matt. 9:38)
The harvest is plenty. There are 52 MILLION Pashtuns waiting to hear the message, and currently? A couple handful workers spread throughout the globe. They are there, and they are sharing, but they are also outnumbered at least a MILLION to ONE. The harvest is in dire need of more workers. ASK THE LORD of the harvest, and He will send out more workers.
